I want to buy/make shirts for my kids for when we go out that read "please don't feed my kids"
Apparently Sugar is its own food group down here....and it drives me nuts! I go to the grocery store and they get offered cookies when I pass the cake counter...which I now avoid. I go to pick up a pizza with the kids and there is a bowl of candy and they get offered candy. I find church the worst for feeding my kids sugar. Now, if those incidents were isolated or happened once in a blue moon, then I wouldn't object. A treat on occasion isn't a bad thing...but a treat every where I go, now that's a problem.
Maybe I'm hyper sensitive but I firmly believe that kids do no need to eat a lot of sugar - in fact the more it's avoided, the better. I rarely even bake with sugar. There is no candy, or chocolate in my house. I do not offer treats to my children every night after dinner.
Fruit is our dessert and anything sugar is considered a treat and must be earned. it's not a right it's a privilege. I don't even let them drink juice frequently.
I got a few funny looks in Toronto for that, but here I get looked at like I have 3 heads most of the time.
I wonder if it occurs to people to ASK before you offer my children sweets? Does it not occur to people that my kids might have allergies. Pumpkin for example is allergic to Red Food Dye - which is in a lot of things! And just in general, red food dye is HORRIBLE stuff.
Oh Emily I don't think I could agree with you more if I tried! I've gotten so many evil eye's from people for this VERY stance. I don't like the grocery store stuffing my kids full of cookies, specially when I've SPECIFICALLY told them "there will be no cookies this time, we just had lunch" or something like that. Or having to SPECIFICALLY tell the Sunday School worker to NOT let my toddler gorge herself on what ever snack they are using to pacify the children.
ReplyDelete"Oh well she keeps saying she wants more." She's 3 of course she wants more there cookies and there sweet!
Grandma's are the WORSE! Cookies and Ice cream and chocolate. All things they RARLY get at home.
At home it's Yogurt, Carrot sticks, Cranberries and Rasins, Crackers and Cheese, apples, oranges and berries. Stuff like that.
Suger is a treat, When people say stuff like "Oh let them there only kids!" My response is "its BECAUSE there Kid's that I'm NOT letting them." They'll thank me later.
I agree - children will eat and eat and eat even if they are full if the food is something the love or is sweet.
ReplyDeleteI hate that excuse "oh they're just kids" that's EXACTLY WHY you have to teach them healthy eating habits when they are young, like brushing your teeth twice a day, or washing your hands before you eat, so that health will be a habit. DUH! especially with child obesity or diabetes etc. on the rise!
It's our responsibility as parents to protect our children form danger....and frankly too much sugar is a danger. Our snacks at home are much the same. The best was when we stopped for a rare treat at Wendy's while running around all day doing errands. I forgot to make sure they gave yogurt as the side instead of fries and Abby had a complete melt down because I had forgotten. Of course, we were able to exchange it, but I was laughing at the looks of spectators.
I hate how church is bad for that. Sugar isn't the answer. and food is not a pacifier!!!!! AHHHH. I will have to have a chat with my sunday school people about the sugar intake.
good for us for being good parents!!
I'm thankful that my in-laws listen to me when I tell them "please don't do this with my kids"
